It is okay for person to hate whoever they want, and okay for them to say negative things about them, that is the American way, but when you have an entire Klan on your side it can turn an entire nation against the hated group of people. I think the issue is not too much freedom (though I readily admit that there are many who should keep their mouths shut in the sense of being insulting). One of the rights that all people in the world at large have that they tend to forget is the right to not pay attention. Sometimes the best way to deal with someone insulting is to ignore them. (With the given example of the KKK, as individuals I think we should merely ignore their rhetoric. Obviously we shouldn't ignore them if they do something illegal.)

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." - The Litany Against Fear, "Dune" by Frank Herbert
