\sqrt{y^2} = \sqrt{3 - x}

= y = +/- \sqrt{3 - x}

The equation already states that you're solving for y. If you solved for x why not just solve in the beginning?

y^2 = 3 - x

= \sqrt{y^2 + x} = +/- \sqrt{3}

Can you solve the rest for x?

If this is wrong maybe someone can correct me but this seems like the easiest way to me...
