It makes me really angry when a person who knows little in one area attacks another. For example, I know absolutely nothing about abstract expressionism but I am able to understand that there is something that people like about it, art does not have to be realistic, just like math does not need to be applied*). Same by Augustine, he probably knew nothing about math, and thought it was like science, which is sometimes blashmeous.
