The Fast Fourier Transform is one of the big ideas behind a large part of signal processing. It can be used in beam forming, filter implementation and in correlators (matched filters) and probably for a large number of other purposes.
And that is not mentioning the use of the FT in partial differential equations, probability, ... etc.
As Dr Lewney says in his lecture "The Maths of Rock Guitar", "If you understand the Fourier Transform you will never be out of work".
