Hypothesis Test 1:

Do female college students pay more for haircuts on average than male college students? Conduct a test of this question using a 3 percent level of significance.

The following data were gathered from Math 10 students taking class Fall 2008.:

Males: 12, 12, 10, 60, 14, 8, 0, 15, 15, 0, 0, 10, 0, 10, 12, 9, 17, 17, 14, 22, 20, 25

Females: 25, 20, 15, 70, 36, 50, , 8, 9, 20, 8, 55, 55, 90, 25, 8, 50, 50, 20, 17, 20, 40,
25, 35, 25, 60, 50, 40, 15, 10, 5

Answer the following questions. Your answers must be typed out in between each question.

1. Identify and define the parameter.
- µf-µm is the difference in the population average costs for haircuts between female and male college students.

2. Identify and define the random variable.
- x bar f-x bar m, is the difference in the average cost of haircuts between one group of 30 female and
one group of 22 male college students.

3. What distribution will you use? Explain why.
- We will use t-distrubtion, because it is a test of the mean average (2 independent population means)
with σ unknown.

4. Circle the correct type of test: Two-tailed Right-Tailed Left-Tailed

5. Write the hypotheses:
Ho: __µf≤µm__________________________ Ha: __µf>µm_______________________

6. What calculator software instruction will you use after STAT – TEST?
________2 Samp T Test______________

7. Identify the symbol and value of your test-statistic: __________t-score____________________

8. Find the p-value: ______________________________

9. Write a sentence that clearly explains the meaning of the p-value in the context of this problem.
