At general Electric, shift 1 produced 4 times as much as shift 2. General Electric’s total production for July was 5,500 jet engines. What was the output for each shift.

Default Number of shifts

You can see it as if shift one produced 4 parts and shift 2 one part. Total is 5 parts. Therefore, shift one produced 4400 engines and shift 2 1100.

If shift one produced x and sift two y, the total production was

x+y=5500

you also know that x=4y, substitute and you get

5y=5500 => y=1100
