Default T-89, Multiplying Binomials

How would I get the Ti-89 to solve for (y+5)(3y-2)? When I enter this in its bare form it just spews out the question I put in.

Hello,

Well, it depends what you want to do with that oO

You can try to use the function develop( )

Or if it's really an equation, you need =0 or something like that. Then, use solve(«equation»[ and «further equations»], «variable(s)»)

What’s the function develop? What I want to do is get the answer laid out in the book which is 3y^2+13y-10. Like I said, this is multiplying the binomials so think of it in terms of the FOIL method.

develop means develop the expression, the contrary of factor.

It may give you what you want...

Check that there is no variable name y in you ti

If there’s an abbreviation for function development then I’m unaware of it. It didn’t work. Nor did putting a =0 at the end of it or using “solve” work. Finally, the variables have been cleared and there hasn’t been a change in the answer it gives.

I'm sorry, it's expand() (F2 -> 3)

I figured out my mistake with expand. I didn't have it in double parenthesis. Thanks for the help.

Here's a screen capture from my TI-92. It wroks essentially the same as the 89. If you want to solve for y, use the 'solve' function.
