Default Math majors having problems with stats

I don't know if this is a common trend but a lot of math majors at the university I attend and others around the area are not good in Stats. I know the school I attend has started to address this problem but is this common else where? Also I see a lot of math tutors can teach up to linear algebra but will not tutor stats.

This is normal from my experience. I wouldn't say most math majors have trouble with stats but simply that many haven't gone past the intro courses. At my university there is a Stats Department which is separate from the Math Department. Stats courses aren't a requirement for a pure math degree either.

My only experience of stats was when I did a course on Maple and R, and so we did some stats on the way. My wife has done more stats than me - and she studied Biology!

In fact, at my uni there were compulsory stats modules for every science degree apart from maths and comp sci...so naturally, mathematicians from there are the wrong people to ask about stats!

I'm taking a Stats course right now, but it's just introductory because I'm assuming that it is since the textbook says it is. It's very easy. I got the highest grade today I found out in my class on the test. Scored a perfect 100. It's the only one they offer at my college though. So far though I've liked it a lot because it's easy to pick up on. I could see myself though looking into it more.

I'm a "math major" with catching up to do.

I've noticed this too. I find it interesting though that the Applied Math program I'm in requires two semesters worth of Statistics. I had no problem with it, until the end of the second semester. I (luckily...maybe?) can say I can tutor some real statistics, but most of it has escaped my memory... XD

I find the stats courses in my uni to be far to easy for the level at which they're taught. (does that make sense..?)

I'm in my 4th year now and there's courses (that I was say are advanced/difficult) on topology, hilbert spaces, abstract algebra etc... Then there's this stats course I'm taking that has the first two sections on the sign test... Stuff that could be taught in first/second year easily.

Not really complaing as it'll be an easy 10 credits but surley 4th year stats courses should be at a 4th year level.
