Default Lost my charm in maths

I used to be very sharp in maths during high school.

Students and teachers used to say Id do a phD in maths.

But start on from Calculus-1 i failed to get even an A-.

I found high school maths and university maths very poles apart.

It was very very trivial.

I graduated last year with B,C and D's in maths courses.

Has anyone experienced this same thing?

Now Im about to take on the challenege agin in grad school .

Ill repeat a few courses.

Math is like sports. It takes practice to become good at it. Don't be discouraged! Keep re-reading material until you get it.

Like the above poster said, it is like sports but even in sports if you lose it, you lose it. Can it come back? maybe, but the drive and willingness is key.

I know this feeling I was awesome at maths in school, then in college I wasn't the best anymore, but I was pretty good, and now... the simplest things can confuse me. I still love maths, but yeah. I'm gonna struggle to get a 2:1 this year methinks

Are you going to graduate school for more math after all that?

Default Failed often in Math

Cheer up,

I failed more math courses than I got A's or B's in, by far. But, that was about 60 years ago.

After I got a job as an oceanographer, I learned to solve differential equations on a computer. Not having a class room of students plus a professor learing at me as I struggled to do problems at the blackboard, helped immeasurably! Plus I had the time and freedom.

About two years ago, well into retirement, I got a copy of Maple and learned enough to be able to reproduce most of the problems in number theory found in "Prime Obsession" by John Derbyshire. Now, I'd say math is a great hobby!

I'd say don't give up. I'd say also that it is almost impossible to learn math unless you are able to concentrate on it without any outside pressures like assignments, going to the blackboard, other subjects, girl-friends, ect.

Now, I'll take a whack at you. Take a moment to re-write your post without misspellings. You are more likely to need precise english language skills than mathematical skills, in most professional jobs.

Very respectfully, Mauri
