Pet Peeve Warning! Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Danger!

Is it just me or is it very distracting when someone starts to use "chat spellings" in an otherwise erudite argument?

For example: A member posts a reply to a user and gives a mathematical induction proof using perfect diction and spelling then tacks on the sentence "u can use this 2 do any other problem."

It just ruins the whole thing for me.

That and the "English" spelling of Greek letters. I can almost understand the "mew" I saw the other day since mu is not a standard Greek letter for many. But someone that uses "pie" just ought to be hung barefoot from the ceiling and have their feet licked remorselessly by a rabid pack of puppies.

Pet peeve over. Thanks for listening/ignoring me. I feel better now.

I ignore this, they just don't know the conventional spelling for Greek
letters. I just use the correct spelling in any reply and assume they will
learn once they see what others use.

Hello, Dan!

I agree completely . . .

Those that say "pie" will surely revive public flogging.

When I first saw "feta", I assumed that the teacher had a lisp.
. . But I've seen it so often, I'm sure it is an epidemic.

I'm waiting to see banking terms next: "sign" and "co-sign".

It makes me angry also. Because this turns this forum, which is of high class, into one of those garbage forums. You know the forum where people talk the idiots, fashion forums, teen forurms, they all make me so angry. I hate it with a love. I think we should make a rule on that.
Anyway, it is only those stupid teenagers who do that stuff.

That does not make me angry.

We should put a ban on chat spellings. They make me angry. How difficult is it to spell out the word "you"? How lazy can you get!

Another thing which makes me angry. A reference to bad grammer. This is not an English forum. And people come here from all over the world. If somebody has bad grammer or spelling, for example, me, I do not care, as long as I can understand him.

Forgive me for doing this, but this whole thread is about how topsquark hates bad grammar.

Grammar is important to me but I have nothing against people who don't use it very well. I know that English is not the primary language of many people on this site so it's fine if they don't use English "properly." My greatest pet peeve, however, is when a person's grammar is so bad I cannot understand what that person is saying. Also, like everyone else here, I hate chat-speak (with the exception of a few abbriviations, like "lol" and the occasional "OMG").

(If "lol" and "OMG" offend anyone here, I apologize for those few times that I use them.)

They make me angry.

Look at my first post on this topic. I say how much I hate the garbage forums. I assume you know what kind of forums I am taking about. Forums where people talk about retarded stuff and always have to use those abbreviations.

Using the occasional "lol" can't be that much worse than using incomplete sentences and absolutely no punctuation, can it?

As you have pointed out, you get upset by people using chat-speak. However, you also get upset when people nit-pick about poor grammar usage. Perhaps it has not occured to you, but chat-speak is a form of bad grammar.

At best, chat-speak is irritating. At worst, bad grammar is impossible to understand.

I think the correct way to say that would be:

"I ain't never not mentioned grammar..."
