Default Financial Aid for College

A good friend of mine is going to college soon and he won't be getting any free money from his parents so I told him he should apply for financial aid.

My parents paid for my college education (and I am paying them back now) so I don't really know anything about this stuff.

Did anybody here apply for financial aid in the UC system or otherwise? Did anybody use FAFSA? I figured many MHF users are in college so this would be a good resource for information

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I used the FAFSA and it flat out sucks. If you are poor, you can go to college. If you are rich, you can go to college. But if you are middle class, better get a scholarship.

If your parents make say $80,000 a year, FAFSA expects them to pay for tuition in full although this would require drastict changes in living for them. Paying for college is very difficult.

Not if you go to a city college.

I used FASFA several years ago and it seemed okay to me. However I was in grad school and not living with my parents.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." - The Litany Against Fear, "Dune" by Frank Herbert
