During my high school years at math competitions there were often "pi-offs" to see who could memorize the most digits. My only question was/is... why?

Yeah, why? If you want to break a world record, memorize something like \sqrt{167-\pi}.

I guess the reason could be that one can find ways/tricks to memorize random numbers. It's maybe useless but it makes work the short term and long term memory if you repeat the process during days.

I memorized that 4 years ago! I don't think I will ever forget it. Pretty much a waste of time though, but it's fun to show off sometimes.
