| | General Survey What level of university are you ?
I'm currently first year EE.
How long have you being actively involved in mathematics ?
1 year for me . I started enjoying math when i took my first course on calculus, i was 16.
Everyone here seems to be levels and levels about me i can't understand 80% of post on this site.:lol
I feel so out of place. I should study more mathematics.

| | Upper freshmen in college, almost done with my first year in about two weeks. I'm an intended pure mathematics major and I'm currently in Calculus 3 (multivariable and series essentially). I'll be taking Linear Algebra over the summer. In the fall I'll be taking Methods of Differential Equations and Bridge to Advanced Mathematics (essentially a class focused on writing proofs for many key theorems). After that, I'll be taking Advanced Calculus 1, 2, and 3. After that...I don't know.

| I've been active in math since 2005, when I started getting ahead in math after finishing 10th grade. Now I'm way ahead of the game when compared with most of my classmates.
I will be active in math for the rest of my life!! The journey is just beginning, since Graduate School is around the corner!!

| | Now i see why you guys are really good in math.
Your all mathematicians to be, i'm going to be an engineer .
Someone told me there aren't much jobs in pure or applied math except to become and actuary or prof ( which is pretty difficult especially at a phD lvl ) |

| | Well, there's always research for pure mathematics. Plus, I'm considering minoring in earth science/astronomy or something similar. My dream job would be to be a mathematician for NASA.

| | I've considering eventually becoming a professor, or at least a high school teacher. I really like when people grasp math thanks to my help. What I might end up doing is getting a degree in pure mathematics and then later on down the road get a degree in math education.

| | Highschool teaching is a sad thing really.
Especially today when kids are really special ed.
Besides highschool kids this days don't respect anyone.
It would be tough teaching those buch, your better of making your own math academy. Unless you get your hands on serious minded / gifted kids.
Highschool kids this days spit on teachers hell at them and show then little to no consideration almost like they are of no consequence.
And my dream job is to design the control systems for Airplanes in Boeing.
We can all dream can't we. |

| | That's really on in the worse off schools, and if I plan on teaching calculus, I would be dealing with serious students anyway, since calculus is optional in most high schools.

| | I probably would, but it was my high school teachers who inspired me to love and pursue mathematics, and I'd love to provide that same type of inspiration and knowledge to the next generation of high schoolers.

| | The problem with high school education is exactly the one presented in this thread. The higher paying, more prestigious jobs with better students are found in college. Thus the best teachers usually don't want to teach high school. I think high school teachers need to have stricter qualifications and higher pay because of it. No more being a high school teacher as a fall back. |

| | I guess if you love it Pink then you should go after it.
I just have a dislike for highschool teachers because of the bad experience i had with them.
I had a gym teacher teaching me calculus is grade 12. He claimed that half of the answers at the back of the textbook were incorrect .
That the reason i stopped going to classes after 3 weeks, i just came for the exam. |

| | Another reason why I might prefer teaching high school instead of college is, from what I've seen so far, the difference in the faculty mindset between high schools and colleges. For me at least, many of the professors at my college are somewhat pretentious and think the ground they walk on is holy because they are college professors (not slighting all college professors, there are definitely some who are not like that at all). Just for me, high school teachers seem to be more humble towards their students. Then again, I went from a specialized NYC high school (one of the top high schools in the city and even the country), to a public city college, so the level of commitment and the standards were much different. I don't know, I've just had a more positive high school experience than I have had at college so far.

| | For me my colleage professors are amazing and humble.
Yeah of course there are the occasional " profs " who think they are doing
" groundbreaking" research but in reality they are doing nothing. Those are the ones that think highly of themselves .
From what i heard though as you go higher you see less and less of those kind of profs, becasue in a way to are getting to their level.
So they can no longer treat you like a kid.
But i see where you are coming from; in general a lot of University profs tend to think too highly of themselves. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
