What kind of math would you call:

good math?

bad math?

beautiful math?

ugly math?

I would tend to agree with your opinion of ugly maths, but I would change the other three (I have not done any financial maths, so I can't comment on it...):

good maths: Algebra

bad maths: Applied maths

beautiful maths: Analysis

ugly maths: Statistics

Personally, I love, adore, and am fascinated by Analysis. I just can't do it...

I don't know if it's what you had in mind, but "ugly math" doesn't mean "hated math".
Though one may hate a subject because it's ugly.

What is "good", and what is "bad", if it's not about beauty ?

This subject will have many points of view. Here's mine. I diagree on your "bad math - Applied Math." Without it, most of our advances in Engineering and Science wouldn't have happened!

i do agree with you!

was it Hardy who said applied math is a bad math? i think applied math is a strange creature: the older she gets, the better looking she becomes! haha

I took "good" and "bad" to be merely what I enjoy or do not enjoy. I enjoy algebra, but applied maths in general just doesn't do anything for me. If good and bad referred to the subjects impact on the real world, then I would naturally be forced to change their order...

Let's see... I'm not sure I fully get the question, but...

Good math: All math! No point otherwise

Bad math: Analysing signals, coding and decoding, spherometry in the large. Anything that applies to the Weapons Industry, and -euphemistically- to "Security" issues.

Beautiful math: Differential and (sigh) Algebraic Topology.

Ugly math: The statistics of finance. Yuck!

You do realise you have just categorised a vary large slice of mathematics as bad here, including most of what you might think of as god maths.
