Default Math courses/on schedule?

My friend's taking these courses in this order:

Freshman Year

Fall 2009

College Algebra
Trigonometry

Intersession 2010

Calculus

Spring 2010

Calculus II
Linear Algebra

Summer 2010
Calculus III

Sophomore Year

Fall 2010

Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations

Do you think this sounds about on schedule for someone who might be majoring in math or minoring? He's getting a minor.

Aren't there criteria for your friend to meet in order to get his minor? I'm sure it would be in your school's academic calendar.

All I've seen so far is that he can take these courses as long as it follows the flowchart, but I'm wondering if that's typically the track for people in their freshman/sophomore year? To be in ODE's sophomore year?

There's like all those courses listed to get an Associate's too except there's General Physics courses (2) as well to get a major or something.

I would say that's pretty typical. I'll lay out what my university does in terms of a (non-honours) major in mathematics and you can judge for yourself. Each course is worth 3 credit hours.

Year I: Introductory linear algebra & vector geometry; Calc I; calc II; statistical analysis I; Introductory computer science; + electives to have a full year

Year II: Fundamentals of Analysis; honours linear algebra II (6 credit hours worth, i.e. spans the entire year); Numerical analysis; honours calc III; ODEs I; + electives

Year III + IV: Algebra (regular or honours); combinatorics; complex analysis I; advanced calc; ODEs II; graph theory; intro number theory; statistical analysis II; 16 courses-worth of 3rd & 4th yr level mathematics

Minimum credit hours for graduation: 120

Note that this 'flow chart' isn't fixed. Things like stats and introductory number theory can easily be done in first and second year.

Hope this helps gauge how your friend stands.
