[SOLVED] Multi-Indexed Sums/Intersection/Unions, etc.

I want to do a multi-indexed sum, I have figured out one way to do it but it is ugly. Can someone help me fix the following so that the text is of equal size?

Hello, im not sure how to raise two variables for one function. For example, x^(yz)

I try to do this in latex by using but that doesn't work. I tried playing with this several other ways but cant figure it out. If someone can tell me how to do this, and also how to do this with three or more varables, then it would be appreciated. Thanks!

If I'm understanding this, the purpose of LaTex is to allow the user to post in symbols such as superscripts, subscripts, sigma notation and the like, right?

Im having problems (recieving a Latex syntax error) when i try and enter some LaTex inside Latex.
E.g if i am trying to write 1/sqrt10, i am using latex for the fraction and then the square root inside of that.

Hi guys,
I just stumbled upon this forum. It seems a great resource for learning latex and I am in dire need of some custom templating for *chapters* and *section*. I am not absolutely new to latex but have never worked in tweaking styles or the like.
I have uploaded the images of the format I would like to have here:
Chapter: Imageshack - chapter
Section: Imageshack - section

Could you please suggest me how to go about?

Hello!

I'm trying to write proofs on LaTex for an essay. However, I can't get them to work.

After looking on other sites I found I had to write it like this:

\begin{proof}Text text text \end{proof}

Unfortunately, this doesn't work when I write it on Kile. I think I need a package called "amstheorem", but I can't find it on synaptic manager!

Can anyone help?

(P.S I'm using Ubuntu 9.10)

Hello everyone. I user Mathtype for my typesetting needs. Unfortunately the capital script letters are not included. I have been told I can download the font needed (mathrsfs) from the internet. I have searched and found a lot of downloadable packages (namely fromt ctan.org) but they all say I need some kind of different compiler or something. Does anyone know where I can get this font and give a quick explanation of how to download it and install it in my fonts folder?

Columns in a LaTeX File

I'm trying to write a LaTex file and i want to get divide what i have into two columns on one page. But i'm not sure how to format it. Any ideas?

Hi there,

I'm using LaTeX to typeset my phys reports for uni. I've noticed three issues I can't seem to fix; not sure where I'm going wrong!

1. I structure my report using \section, \subsection, \subsubsection and \paragraph. I like the paragraphs, but the paragraph numbering usually continues across sections (so I might for example have paragraphs a and b in subsection 1.1, but then in subsection 1.2 the next two paragraphs are labelled c and d instead of a and b.) However this is not always the case! In a recent, longer report I had: ... 1.3 a, b, c ... 2.1 d, e ... 4.3 a. So I am confused as to why this might be.

2. I print on A4 and so have set up TeXshop to output pdfs as A4, but the right-hand margins are narrower than the left, and the bottom margins much wider than the top. (On the pdf itself, not a printer setup issue.) What can I do to correct this?

3. When compiling the report, the console contains the error ' warning: there were undefined references' but I have taken care to label and refer to all figures consistently. I compile again but this does not change.

Hi all:

Several times already I've tried to write about a function that is "defined" or "undefined" somewhere using LaTex, but I get the following error message: [LaTex Error: Restricted command found (def)]
Since I can't believe we can't write "defined" using LaTex. what is the way to overcome these restrictions? I tried using " ", enclosing the word in brackets [] , etc., but nothing.

Hi all:

When you write in plain format and then you use [math and etc. to write mathematics, the formulae in maths appear larger than the plain writing' fonts.

On the other hand, if you want you can use \mbox { } to write nicely plain text and with the same fonts size as maths formulae, BUT you have to close with [/math] every few words otherwise when you send it there appears an error:"Message too large" or something simmilar

My question: is there any way to define something like \article or whatever that'll allow me to write both plain writing and maths formulae WITHOUT having to close lines every few words with [/math] in order not to get the "too large" message?
