Help a tile fixer

I wonder if you can help.
I'm having a bit of a debate with some tiler friends of mine.
The debate is to do with adhesive bed depths.
If I use a trowel withe a square notch, and a depth of 20mm, like this.

I spread my adhesive with the trowel at a 45* angle.

Like so.
What will be the thickness of the adhesive bed?
If you could give me an answer, and some workings out, that would be great.

I wish I'd payed more attention at school.

20 cos (45 Degrees) = 20 times square root of 2 divided by 2 which is about 14.1 mm.

I wish I'd could lay tile, but I can't. So this may be totally wrong.
But I think that you have an isosceles right triangle with hypotenuse 20mm.
So the height of the adhesive bed is that of one leg.
So we get: $\sin \left( {45} \right) = \frac{h}{{20}}\quad \Rightarrow \quad h = 20\sin (45) = 10\sqrt 2 \approx 14.14mm$ .
I hope that is correct in tiling, it is in mathematics.
