Default Can't get the matrix input working

[math ]
\begin{array}{cccc}
0.5&0.5&0&0\\
0.5&0&0.5&0\\
0.5&0&0&0.5\\
0&0&0&1
\end{array}
[/math]

I can't get the Latex matrix to work. What did I do wrong?

You must declare the number of columns in the matrix.
