Smile how to create def symbol?

Please, help me define a math symbol for definition as shown in

Table of mathematical symbols - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

is defined as; equal by definition

it is the equal sign under a small font 'def'

the same symbol is also provided in OpenOffice math, but not in Latex.

Thank you all.
Stephen

Why not just use :=?

You can define them:

\buildrel\triangle\over =

gives:

\buildrel\triangle\over =

and:

\buildrel d\over =

gives:

\buildrel d\over =

(we can't put "def" over "=" because our LaTeX always seems to throw an reserved word exception to any string starting def.

and of course \doteq gives \doteq

You can fool the system into accepting a reserved word like def by disguising it, splitting it up with a pair of braces.

[math]\buildrel \text{d{}ef}\over =[/math] produces \buildrel \text{d{}ef}\over = .
