It sounds to me like you might be typing a LaTex formula within italic-formatted font in WYSIWYG (<EM> is the WYSIWYG formatting tag for italic font). Try and avoid typing LaTeX (especially long LaTeX formulas) in WYSIWYG and see what happens.

I don’t use WYSIWYG myself as I can always preview what I type before I post.
