Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day, but teach a man to fish, and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

You need this:

[math]f^{-1}(x)= \left \{ \begin{array}{ll} x & \text{if x $\ge$ 0} \\ -x & \text{if x $<$ 0}\end{array} \right.[/math]

The period makes all the difference.
