Default Table of Contents help.

Hi. I am having an extremely frustrating time trying to add a table of contents to my thesis. The table is there, but the subsections are not indenting. I'm using the amsart class and haven't introduced any changes or used any fancy code. The introductory commands are as follows:

\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage{amsfonts}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\bibliographystyle{amsplain}
\begin{document}

\title[]{}
\author{}
\date{\today}
\maketitle

\begin{abstract}
\end{abstract}

\newpage
\tableofcontents
\newpage

Is there something I'm missing? Am I just an idiot? The only time in my life I've been more frustrated was when I was figuring out BibTeX.
