sorry to hear about your misfortune in the quiz. if it is any consolation, only you could lose a point with such bravado. of course, why did you take the complex cube root? there are 3 cube roots of -1 in the complex plain, one happens to be real, namely, -1

Today I got a point off on a quiz while evaluating an integral..the reason? Here is what I said

$(-1)^{\frac{1}{3}}=e^{\ln\left((-1)^{\frac{1}{3}}\right)}=e^{\frac{\pi{i}}{3}}=\cos\left(\frac{\pi}{3}\right)+\sin\left(\frac{\pi}{3}\right)i=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}i$

The intended answer $\left(-1\right)^{\frac{1}{3}}=-1$

....
