Default Simple Math Program

Hi,

I'm looking for a basic (freeware preferably) math sketchpad type program that just allows me to type down formulas on a sketch pad in math font and aid in solving/formatting them, similar to many software coding compilers, exept for math.

Does anyone know of any such thing that exists?

Ive tried geometer's sketchpad but theres no option for writing down formulas for solving, just good for geometry/trig.

Any help would be appriciated,

Thanks

Have you looked into getting Mathematica? I use it, and it is superb, but it is not basic and usually not free. However, since it is not basic, it can do just about anything, and you might be able to get a copy for cheap or even free from your university if you are student. You could also look for freeware versions of the program online.

I currently use Mathematica 7, by Wolfram Research.

Mathimatica is a fantastic program. Maple is another that is very powerful, it is based around C programming. It has really great help functions that give you sample code you can adjust to suit your own query.

Once again if you are to buy it commercially it will be quite expensive. I'm sure there will be a older version floating around cyberspace for free.
